The Umeed Partnership

is a charity registered in both Pakistan and the United Kingdom to support a project which offers opportunities for empowerment of women in the male-dominated tribal communities of western Baluchistan, one of the remotest and poorest areas of Pakistan adjacent to the border with Afghanistan. The project has recently been extended to slum districts of Lahore and to marginalised Hindu Dalit communities in the Cholistan desert, where provision of education and vocational training in the form of carpentry and woodworking is also made for boys.

Salma and Roxanna

Following support from Umeed, Salma and Roxanna from Bahawalpur are now earning Rs 10,000 (£85) each month by selling their work locally. “Umeed has helped us stand on our own feet since the death of our mother” said Roxanna.

New School

A new Umeed multi-faith school has opened amid great celebrations in a minority community near Bahawalpur.

Prestatyn Swimming Club

Prestatyn Swimming Club raised £500 for Umeed during a sponsored swim in December. A cheque was presented to Clive on 8 March.

Porthmadog Prifio

Umeed has been chosen as the beneficiary for donations made at the Porthmadog Prifio week at the end of March. John Perkins gave a short presentation (just prior to Bishop Richard Holloway’s address!) on 25 March, St. John’s Church Porthmadog

Bangor Rotary

Bangor Rotary has submitted a bid for £9716 to the Rotary Foundation to provide security walls, latrines, school furniture and a potable water supply for the Umeed Primary School in Yazman. The outcome will be known in July.
